Rehabilitator Education:
Bat Workshop
Join Save Lucy and Maryland Wildlife Rehabilitators Association in an all-day bat workshop. This workshop is not limited to rehabilitators. We welcome animal control officers, biologists, and bat enthusiasts!
When: February 9, 2013; 9:30am to 3:30pm (6 hours CE for permitted rehabilitators and volunteers)
Where: Oregon Ridge Nature Center, 13555 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030

Topics include Natural History, Species ID, Rehab Basics, Handling with live bats (for vaccinated attendees only), Diagnostic Lab and an update on WNS.

All proceeds support Save Lucy’s education and rehabilitation programs. We thank MWRA for making this workshop possible and for supporting bat rehabilitation.

We are developing several projects we’d like to launch/move forward with/finish. We could really use some equipment and/or supplies to keep us going. Our wish list is below, in no particular order…

Education: Our current tabletop displays are falling apart. The display boards were donated or bought used and, after making appearances at hundreds of events, are showing their age. We desperately need new boards, which are sturdier and, mercifully, lighter!

Bat Care: We use high-quality magnification to see what’s going on with injured and orphaned bats. Our current magnifying lamp is old, noisy, and well, not so hot. A better lamp would save time and stress for new arrivals.

Captive Management: In an effort to document whether or not our management efforts elicit normal behaviors, we need to see what our shy, nocturnal charges are up to. The only unobtrusive way to do so is through video surveillance. We need IR cameras and a motion activated DVR. We received a recommendation for a motion activated DVR. Once we have that, we can sample cameras to find what best suits our needs. Seriously, who doesn’t want to know what Tinybat does at night??

Captive management: We are prototyping a hibernation chamber that anyone can build with readily available supplies. In order to track performance, we need dataloggers to track humidity and temperature to ensure conditions are constant and stable enough for actual bats in hibernation.

Captive Management: Feeding bats gets expensive. We now have four facilities holding and feeding bats and go through 20,000 mealworms a month, on average. Our rehabilitators and apprentices chip in, but we will gratefully accept donations toward mealworms to take the burden off them. We carry a credit at our supplier, Southeastern Insectaries, under president Leslie Sturges’ name.

Please click our card below to read our year-end report. We had a bittersweet year; we said goodbye to too many of our older education bats, WNS continues to spread unabated, fruit bats are being targeted in Queensland, and the Christmas Island pipistrelle was declared extinct. But despite the sad things, we met amazing caring people who went out of their way to rescue lost bats, worked with researchers and rehabbers who are giving their all to save vanishing bats, welcomed new volunteers and apprentices who are giving their precious time to help our local bats and our mission, and talked to thousands of young people who care deeply about bats, the environment, and the world they’re growing up in. Thanks to all our members and friends who support us with time, donations, and kind words. And of course, thanks to all the bats who give us a reason to keep fighting for them.

Happy Thanksgiving!
We are thankful for our friends, even when they are practically picking our nose!
We are truly thankful for all the people who make it possible for us to teach others about bats and white nose syndrome, for the volunteers who help take care of the bats, for the vets who help fix the broken ones, for the people who care enough to bring in lost bats or find ways to live in peace with the wild ones, and for the bats, long may they fly!

Sad News for Bats

On Tuesday, the US Fish & Wildlife Service announced that 5.7 to 6.7 MILLION bats have died in northeastern North America since 2006. We are very sad to hear this news, but we believe that people who are willing to stand up for bats can help safeguard the remaining bat populations. Please do your part to let people know that bats are important and that they aren’t creepy, scary or dangerous. Thanks for helping!

NEBWG 2011

President Leslie Sturges and Board Member Vicki Windham are at the annual NEBWG meeting in Carlisle PA. There are over 100 biologists, state agency representatives, educators, researchers, and students here.

A Huge Thank You redux

We were honored when Penn State Dickinson School of Law’s Student Animal Legal Defense Fund included Save Lucy in their Year of the Bat fundraiser. They raised enough money to help subsidize adult education programs, purchase Lucy’s Club incentives, or provide 4 months of mealworms for the education bats.

However in our initial annoucement of their incredible generosity, we inadvertently left out the members of the ALDF’s University Park Branch. They are: Holly Moncavage, Jessica Brown, John Novak, and Jesse Baez to whom we extend a belated but heartfelt Thank You.

Because we don’t yet have a picture of these fine young people to post, we thought we’d share a picture of a happy bat instead to show how the SALDF is helping bats!
